Background

This processing plant faced operational challenges due to ceramic dust from the manufacturing process passing through their clarifier, even with flocculent addition.

Challenge

The passing ceramic dust was collecting in their GAC filters resulting in frequent backwash cycles to reduce pressure differential and interfering with the GAC filters’ ability to perform their intended service.

Solution

18 x 48” AGF filters with Pep Active Grade 1 media, external source backwash. The Pep Active media and AGF filter housing were chosen based on successful on-site piloting to substantiate improvement in performance and reduction of backwash frequency for the GAC system.

Results

The backwash frequency of the GAC was reduced by a factor of approximately 6. Before installation of the Pep Active media, the GAC was backwashing every 48 hours, and after installation, backwash occurs approximately every 15 days. Piloting showed that the Pep Active media filter was able to reduce the TSS in the clarifier effluent by 90%.
