Background

Rural Funds Poultry manages infrastructure that grows around 30 million chickens per year in 154 sheds in Griffith (NSW) and Lethbridge (VIC). In Griffith the customer operates at least four groups of poultry farms in the surrounding area, with each group consisting of 2-4 farms.

Challenge

Amiad was engaged to undertake an assessment of an existing filtration system to ascertain whether it could be improved or whether it should be replaced. Upon investigation it was found that the existing system was only reducing the turbidity from 13.4 to 10.2 NTU, which was well above the required product water quality target of ≤ 1 NTU that is a prerequisite for disinfection, bird gut health and growth. The existing system was dilapidated and potentially an incubator for biological growth. While the existing system could be improved, there would be some limitations. It was concluded that a properly design system would be preferable.

Solution

Amiad proposed a containerised system that provided 3 stages: Acid Dosing System;  Coagulant Dosing System, and Dual Bed Media Filtration with an allowance for a chlorine dioxide dosing system to be incorporated in the future. The media filters utilise a dual bed of coarse anthracite and fine AFM glass media which ensure high quality filtrate and resistance to biofouling in the filtration and underbed layers. Pre / post filter turbidity, and pH are measured online and trended, allowing the critical control points of the plant to be monitored and controlled remotely.

Results

The containerised system was commissioned and tested on site with a dramatic improvement in product water quality. Overall, both turbidity and pH requirements were met:
