Background

The Ciudad de la Salud, the largest hospital facility in Panama, receives its water from IDAAN, Panama’s National Institute of Water and Wastewater, and stores it in two water storage tanks of 950 m3 each. The water from these tanks is distributed to each floor of the facility and used as potable water.
Due to the fact that much of the water infrastructure in Panama City is built from old pipelines, sediment from these pipes enters the distribution network, requiring quality municipal water filtration to ensure that the water is safe and clean for hospital use.

Challenge

Solids from the pipelines end up in the water storage tanks, essentially turning them into sedimentation tanks.
In order to keep the system running as efficiently as possible, the tanks required constant cleaning resulting in added expenses for labor and maintenance.
Protecting the water storage tanks was essential to maintain the stable supply of potable water to the hospital.
Adding automatic filtration would also save costs by prolonging the maintenance intervals.

Solution

Amiad’s 8” Sigma Pro multi-screen polymeric automatic water filter with a filtration degree of 80 microns was installed, equipped with an ADI-P controller with Bluetooth® technology for linking with the ADI-BLE app.

Results

The municipal water filtration system guarantees the constant supply of quality water to the facility staff and patients, and is an integral part of the water quality control system, giving the Ciudad de la Salud the ability to monitor and control the waters’ physical, chemical and biological variables.
