Background

The leading engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company in Africa has successfully constructed numerous desalination plants for a major player in phosphate mining in North Africa for the supply of both
process and potable water.
One of these plants, the Jorf Lasfar Desalination Plant in Morocco, desalinates 40 million m³ of seawater per year.

Challenge

The existing filtration system was unable to provide adequate and reliable protection for the UF membranes, and Amiad was contacted by the EPC to provide a retrofitted seawater coarse filtration package.
As with any retrofit installation, the new filtration system had to be compatible with the existing manifolds and footprint.
In addition, in order to keep the expenses incurred by shutting down the plant to a minimum, we were required to deliver the new package in as short a period of time as possible. This was especially difficult due to the Covid-19 crisis and its global implications, such as the labor shortages and shipping restrictions.

Solution

5 x OMEGA 108K filters
• 100 micron weave wire screens (SMO 254)
• Constructed out of carbon steel with rubber lining
• Super Duplex stainless steel (SDSS) internals
• Design Code: ASME Sec.VIII, DIV.1, Ed.19
Valves (per filter)
• 2 x 6” pneumatic actuated butterfly valve
• 1 x 2” automatic air release valve
Instrumentation (per filter)
• 2 x pressure transmitter
Control panels (for all 5 filters)
• 4 x slave local control panel (LCP) with HMI
• 1 x master LCP with HMI

Results

The package was successfully commissioned, on time, in July 2022.
Since commissioning, the system has been operating to the customers’ full satisfaction, successfully providing protection to the UF membranes, decreasing OPEX and minimizing downtime.
The system is designed to support the future expansion of the desalination plant.
